![]() ![]() This indicates that like the Constant, the events of "flashes before your eyes" is him shifting his consciousness through time and that technically all these events already happened because future Desmond was taking control of his past self and therefore everything he did in flashes, is lead to all the events of him coming to the island in the first place. But she only says that in "flashes" and she nods as to say that she remembers and that what she said was true. But both our theories dont line up with what we learn 5:06: 316 when Desmond says: "this bloody woman cost me four years of my life because she told me that I was supposed to go to the island, that it was my bloody purpose!". I believed that the events of 3x08 took place in some pocket dimension where he could relive important events of his life. At one point I had a similar theory to you. I really like you this but I don't think it completely holds up to scrutiny. ![]() I admit that this is a stretch, but it’s the only theory i could come up with for this episode, and i wanna know what you think? Is this possibly right, or has this show driven me to insanity? The reason for him not waking up naked after his ‘event’ in 6x11 could be due to the amount of radiation he was exposed to was significantly less than in 3x08. Maybe, after Desmond goes through these events, he dies (or comes close enough to death where he’s ‘on the border’) and is reborn, either due to the Island ‘not being done with him yet’ or just because of his special relationship with electromagnetism. In the show we see both Life and Death, so maybe we also see rebirth. Another point is that in 6x11, Desmond is only transported to the Purgatory because Whidmore puts him through another electromagnetic event, similar to the one that he experiences at the end of Season 2, and after both of these incidents he is transported to a very similar place.Īnother piece of evidence that supports my theory is that Desmond wakes up naked after the turning of the Key, which is seemingly a random detail, until you consider the fact that in 6x15, The Mother says that the Source of the Island is ‘Life, Death, Rebirth’. Now in 3x08, she has a very similar role as a sort of ‘Guide’. Also, in 6x11, Happily Ever After, Eloise tells Desmond to stop looking for Penny, as she knows that will cause him to remember the rest of his life before. ![]() In The End, Eloise and Desmond have a conversation at the Concert, and it’s very clear that Eloise has a good idea of how the Purgatory works and what it’s ‘rules’ are. He also recalls a night in a bar where a chain of events occur, and he remembers that this will happen on a certain night, but then it turns out he got ‘the wrong night’. For example, he meets Charlie in this dimension, and obviously he doesn’t meet him Pre-Island in real life. Now here’s the crazy part- i think this ‘dimension’ was the Purgatory seen throughout Season 6.Īs i previously stated, Desmond experiences things that are fairly similar to his real life, which is exactly what happens in the Purgatory. In this ‘mirror dimension’ he also meets with Eloise, who somehow seems to know what’s going on and why it’s happening. When Hurley finds him naked in the Jungle, it’s clear that he has been through something, but what? Now in 3x08, it shows us that after he turned the Key, he woke up in an ‘alternate universe’ where he was experiencing things that were identical, or very similar, to his real life. Spoilers for the whole show.Īfter Desmond turned the Key, he was exposed to very high levels of electromagnetic radiation. So ever since my first watch, Season 3 Episode 8, Flashes Before Your Eyes has been one of the episodes that i didn’t really have any answers for, so after my first rewatch, i’ve made a, probably wrong, theory about what happened to Desmond after he turned the Key in The Swan. ![]()
